 MONTHLY SPECIAL    July 2006
My first car was a '68 Sunlit Gold coupe which I purchased on 10 Aug 1982 while in high school. I became fascinated with Mustang through a friend of my older brother. He owned a '67 coupe and his brother owned a body shop where I spent many hours helping work on cars. I found the car through a friend of my sisters whose father had just purchased it while on business in Texas. After graduated high school I put the coupe up for sale but luckily no one wanted to pay me what I felt it was worth, so today it is my daily driver.

Once I had graduated from college and joined the Air Force my passion began to build again about Mustangs plus I could now afford to purchase another one. While stationed in Seattle Washington I started looking for other mustang, mainly a convertible or fastback. On a work trip back Oklahoma City, Oklahoma I went to the local mustang restoration store, Mustang Parts of Oklahoma. While browsing through the mustang books, I came across Paul’s 1996 GT/CS recognition guide (the first time I had ever heard about this special car). Once returning to Seattle I did a quick search on the internet for California Special and found this site, that was back in 1999.

Since my coupe was Sunlit Gold in color I thought it would be interesting to purchase a CS in the same color. I placed a request on this site stating I was looking for a Sunlit Gold CS. After waiting around a month, someone from California posted a reply stating they had a Sunlit Gold CS they where looking to sell. I contacted them that night and found out the car was the twin sister to my coupe, only 250 VIN numbers apart from each other. After some negotiations, I drove to LA to pick up the car. It had been in a front end accident with the previous owner at which time it was given a "quickie cosmetic fix". I didn't mind since all the hard to find CS fiberglass parts where in good shape. The CS had only 88,000 original miles on it and had only been drive one year in the previous 12 years.

Once I got it home, I drained the gas tank, checked all the other fluids, filled it with fresh gas and it fired right up. I intended to start working on it right away but because of my life in the Air Force, moving is a constant therefore the restoration would have to be put off. I brought it to my parents in Minnesota where it has been ever since. I hope to start on the restoration in the near future.

The pictures where taken in the summer of ’05 after I had returned from duty in South Korea and decided to pick up my coupe to use as my daily driver in Georgia. As you can see it has a way to go before it looks presentable, but it is drivable and still gets a lot of “thumbs up” from passers by. But for now I am content to drive my coupe everyday while I dream of someday taking the CS to many car shows and cruise nights.
