1968 HIGH COUNTRY SPECIAL

OWNER: Jon Hanna
EMAIL: webmaster@californiaspecial.com
YEAR: 1968 HCS
ENGINE: 289-2V 8-cyl (code C)
TRANSMISSION: C4 Auto (code W)
COLOR: Highland Green (code R)
DSO: 51 (Denver)
LOCATION: Phoenix, AZ
OPTIONS: PS, PDB, AM Radio
COMMENTS: OK, so you guys (and gals) finally convinced me to put my own car up in my gallery. Well these are definitely the "before" shots. Unfortunately I haven't had much time to work on it so the "after" photos may take a while.

I bought the car from the original owner in Boulder, CO. He had bought it from a dealer in Golden, CO when he was 18. The car had been parked outside and not driven for quite a few years. After leaving notes on the windshield for about 2 years I finally saw it driving down the street on my way to work. I quickly turned around and followed him to his office (I probably scared him to death!) and as it turns out we were both in the same profession. Well that little connection was all it really took. He said he needed to sell it but wanted to make sure the person who bought it would appreciate and restore it rather than just sell it to make a fast buck. I guess I convinced him I was that person because 2 days later I drove it home.

The body needs the most work due to surface rust and deep rust at the rear quarter panels. Other than that the body is very straight and all the "special" components are there and in good shape. As I restore it I plan to photograph my progress and document it on this site.

EMAIL: hcs68@hotmail.com
YEAR: 1968 HCS
ENGINE: 289-2V 8-cyl (code C)
TRANSMISSION: 3 spd (code 1)
COLOR: Wimbleton White (code M
DSO: 51 (Denver)
LOCATION: Fort Collins, CO
OPTIONS: Nothing but the HCS package
COMMENTS: In Denver during the summer of 1982 I traded my '79 Mustang Pace Car for this white and black beauty - even money, no cash involved. My dad thought I was crazy! I didn't even know what a High Country Special was at the time. But I loved the uniqueness of the car and have never looked back. I did some research at the library and found old ads and articles on the High Country Specials and you can view that info on this great site. Click here.

It was semi-restored when I got it and remains that way today. I've added some non-stock items over the years such as: toploader 4-spd from '73 Mach I, 4-barrel carb & intake, dual exhaust and overhead/floor consoles, GT badges from a Torino. It's my baby forever!

TRANSMISSION: C4 Auto (code W)

DSO: 72 (San Jose)
LOCATION: Skelleftea, Sweden
OPTIONS: AC, PB, PS
COMMENTS: Imported from California in 1999. Very early model with Marchal foglights, and in a fine unrestored condition. According to VIN, it's made on the 27th December 1967. It's a daily driver during the summertime, and we enjoy every mile!

EMAIL: ExDuck35@aol.com
YEAR: 1968 GT/CS
ENGINE: 302-4V 8-cyl (code J)
TRANSMISSION: 4 spd (code 5)
COLOR: Presidential Blue (code X)
DSO: 53 (Kansas City)
LOCATION: Baldwin, NY
OPTIONS: Gold GT/CS stripes, Styled Steel wheels, PS, PDB, AM Radio, Lower Console, Deluxe Steering Wheel
COMMENTS: Side decal stripe is gold. Made contact with last owner. He did a ground up restoration in 98/99 and the stripe (even though the books don't list gold) was an option given certain dealers as an incentive to sell more cars. My car is a Presidential Blue and originaly had a white stripe. The gold gives it a much more distinctive look. Took 2nd place at first show last week!
Everything on car is new or rebuilt. Engine is 1968 J-code 302ci/230hp. Rear end is 3.50:1 ratio. Clutch, pressure plate, suspension, rear end, transmission all new. Front seats new and interior and headliner all redone. Chrome bumpers are new and most chrome was replaced. If it looked acceptable it was left alone and original.

YEAR: 1966 HCS Convertible
ENGINE: 289 C
TRANSMISSION: 3 spd
COLOR: Timberline Green
DSO: 51(0244)
LOCATION: Indiana
OPTIONS: Convertible!!!
COMMENTS: I am believed to be the 4th owner of the car. It was fully restored to a very nice weekend driver condition in 1995-1996. This is a very correct original car with only a few exceptions. In 1966 there were 333 HCS units produced. 35 of the 333 were convertibles. This car was not gifted with a lot of options but it is the only documented and registered (Bob Teets) 1966 HCS Convertible in existence. There is believed to be one or two other convertibles out there somewhere but are currently undocumented or registered. This is truly one of the rarest Mustangs in existence. It is an honor to own such a rare piece of Mustang history.

TRANSMISSION: 4 spd (code 5)
COLOR: Highland Green (code R)
DSO: 51 (Denver)
LOCATION: Ann Arbor, MI
OPTIONS: Power Steering, Air
COMMENTS: I am the fourth owner of this car. It has 97,xxx miles. I have a fair amount of documentation on this car. I found this car on the internet and it needs a fair amount of work to bring it back to its original state. I look forward to the challenge of restoring this car to its original condition.

OWNER: Robert Hanet
EMAIL: cal-special@home.com
YEAR: 1968 GT/CS
ENGINE:
TRANSMISSION: 4 spd (code 5)
COLOR: Highland Green (code R)
DSO: 72 (San Jose)
LOCATION: Rochester Hills, MI
OPTIONS: Bench seat
COMMENTS: I purchased the car already missing some original components. (ie: engine, rear axle, fog lamps.) Some 'Heathen' also decided to put side pipes on it some time ago. These were the first to go. Since originality was not my main concern, I opted for a posi 9" rear end w/ disc brakes and moser 31 spline axles. I also added a 69 351 Windsor motor with roller cam & lifters, forged flat top pistons, TFS Twisted Wedge heads, and soon to be installed fuel injection. The 17" Cobra R wheels fit nicely with some billet aluminum spacers. A Rod & Custom Motorsports independant front suspension and rack & pinion steering adds to the comfort/performance level.
