Well i set out to California Dragway in Fontana trying to hit 110mph in the quarter mile...my previous fastest races were: 12.498 for e.t. during the summer and 12.199 for e.t. during the winter....109.79mph for the summer and 108.64mph for the winter...

well they let over 500 cars race and i got in 4 races from arriving at 5:40am to leaving at 5pm, here are my times:

first race 10:18am (approx 80degrees F and very little wind)
12.274 @ 109.77mph with a 60' of 1.765 and reaction time of .063

at this point i was a little disappointed because i knew that the day was going to just get hotter and i didnt think i would have a chance of hittin 110mph...

second race 12:33pm (approx 90degrees F with some tail wind)
12.303 @ 111.08mph with a 60' of 1.855

BROKE 110MPH!!!!! (i power braked to 3000rpm coming off the line) but was the 111.08mph a fluke???...well...

third race 2:41pm (approx 100degrees F with some tail wind)
12.354 @ 111.03mph with a 60' of 1.844

backed up the 111mph time to prove it!

last race 3:49pm---12.392 @ 110.74mph with a 60' of 1.843

Well i got sunburned and cooked in the heat, but it was well worth it to set my new fastest speed record which now stands at 111.08mph

Here are the pictures of the 4 timeslips:

Great job David.

Impressive that you were able to increase your speed as the day wore on especially since the air gets less dense as the temperature rises which means less oxygen through the motor.

Going to the racetrack is always fun and educational. I meet new people with sweet cars and discuss technical information to put my car in perspective. Here is some of the interesting things that went on at the track:

They opened the gates around 6am and everyone had a chance to walk around checking out everyones cars until around 7am when they started passing out the tech cards...

well i went over to check out this 1964 Falcon Convertible...met a nice guy named Ben who had never raced his car before...

turns out his car weighs approx 3200lbs...similar to mine...he has a 347 stroker in it, just like mine...he has a ford 9" with 4.11 gears, just like mine...

well he has edlebrock aluminum heads with 58cc combustion chambers, a high-rise intake manifold with a 750cfm demon carb, hyd roller camshaft...the details go on...

he had it on an engine dyno when he built it...and it made 450 engine HP and 400lb.-ft. torque....then once he had it in the car he put it on a chassis dyno....here is where i learned some useful info....it made 350HP and 325 torque at the wheels...thats a 100HP loss through the drivetrain (With a 5-speed transmission!!)...that leads me to believe that making 384 HP at the wheels with my automatic with the same 9" rear end and gears and engine for that matter...i can infer with some confidence that im at about 500HP at the engine.

So that was cool to learn....the people at the track ended up not letting Ben make his first race for some reasons: his car is a convertible and one of his latches didnt work to have the convertible top up during the race, if you go faster than 13.99 with a convertible you need a roll bar and a helmet and he had neither (so i let him borrow my helmet, but they ended up not letting him race for the other forementioned reasons)...real nice guy and car..check out the pictures

i met a guy named steve mundy with a 72 Camaro...talk about a muscle car...that thing is a monster...he has a dart block that was a 502ci...but is now bored and stroked out to somewhere around 572ci with AFR heads and a 1050cfm carb...a powerglide trans with 8" converter and transbrake with 4.30 gear and 19.5" wide slicks, roll cage..the whole works.....825HP at the engine an 770lb.-ft. torque...he ran 10.48 at 133mph saturday...his cam has over .700" lift and the duration was like 270degrees at .05" crazy stuff...i was overwhelmed...it puts my little 12 second CS in perspective haha, anyways check out the pictures

other races i saw:

New model saleen mustang with a whipple supercharger 13.0 at 112.4mph

AWD trailblazer SS suv black 14.98 @ 93mph, 14.81 at 93.9mph
AWD trailblazer SS suv red 14.32 @ 97.6mph, 14.31 98.4mph

VW bug 60's green (see picture) beat an EVO 8 in a heads up race
bug ran 13.39 @ 100mph and the evo ran 13.9

Civic coupe ran 11.46 @ 123mph

2003 mach 1 with some bolts ons, but stock tires and 5-speed
ran 14.5 @100mph

350Z ran 14.83 @ 96mph

Fox body mustang ran 11.0 @ 126mph

SRT8 charger ran 13.9 @ 104mph

Dodge Viper SRT10 truck ran 14.9 @ 95.4mph

2005 GT mustang convertible with slicks ran 14.0 @ 99mph

E55AMG mercedes supercharged 469HP ran 13.54 @ 106mph

C5 corvette 13.6 @ 106.7mph

C6 Z06 12.55 at 119mph

C5 Z06 ran 12.23 @ 119.9mph

C5 vette ran 13.04 @ 110.5mph

C6 vette ran 12.85 @ 113mph

GT0 6.0L ran 14.61 @ 96.5mph

C5 vette ran 14.26 @ 103mph

2005 mustang GT with an automatic with MT 275 drag radials all stock except for a paxton blower with 3000stall converter and 4.10 gears ran 12.07 @ 115mph

so those were the cars that i found interesting enough to write down their times and speeds...the above mentioned 12.07 @ 115mph GT mustang really impresses me.

if this website had the capability to allow me to post videos, you could see the VW bug beat the EVO and you could see the 72 Camaro make a low 10 second pass pulling off the ground, but it doesnt...sorry..but...

you can see the video of my last run on www.myspace.com/gtcs347
god bless my dad for taking the video...he's not really good with a camera and out of the 4 races this is the only video that is good enough to post

Very COOL David!

When I watched you go the gears in your CS it took me back to 1969 when I first raced my CS at the strip. Thanks, it gave me a rush.

Definitely can't make the 20th, but maybe the stars will align for August 11. Is that in Fontana? Maybe we can talk Louie into showing up, too. You out there, Louie?

Sounds like a calendar photo op. Especially since the cars are exact opposites; black on white, and white on black.

coming from the man with 1 of 3 428 CS's that really meant alot to me...thank you...do you remember any of your times or speeds from 1969?

Ya Joe California Speedway in Fontana August 11th, get there at or before 6am...go to www.californiaspeedway.com or click on this link for racing rules:

http://www.californiaspeedway.com/dragwayrules/

you will need a helmet and a return spring on your carburetor and depending on whether or not you have a pair of slicks to put on your car...you will need racing studs, a driveshaft safety loop...depending on your shifter you'll need a reverse block off and your car cant start in gear...what else....battery tie down....wear pants also

Yes, David I do remember that my times were mostly in the mid 13 second range. I don't know if that was good or bad for my stock CS/CJ.

My best time that I can remember was after getting my CS supertuned. Back then that ment new plugs, points, wires, adjust carb., and then use the timing light and dwelmeter. Anyway, I raced heads up with the new 454 Vet, I turned 13.1@105, and beat the Vet. This was the only time slip I saved, I'll put it in my Gallery if I can remember where it is.

I will try and show up to watch you at LACR. Depends on how busy the night is. So don't worry when I get out of my black and white and walk toward you...

What are racing studs?

standard studs mounted on the axles are really short...i had racing studs put in that have extra length on them (1/2" in diameter)...so when i said racing studs...i mean studs that have sufficient length...they check this at the track...the standard studs are less than 3" and i think my studs are 5"

John, beating a 454 vette at the track with a 13.1 at 105mph...thats freakin cool man haha...did you have some cheater slicks on it? or some wide rear tires? ...what was your rear end gear ratio?

officer tucker...it would be cool to see you there and finally get to meet you :)
