hi
Are there any special numbers on trim data plate or in vin # to indicate a California Special or HCS car?
Was a specific block of vin numbers used, ranging from -to?
Old CAr Price Guide says for 1968 Calif. Special, to add 200% for series 135. I dont know what series 135 is, but assume it is for a car with a special racing engine?
thanks to anyone for help.

Aren't the series 135 the lightweight CJ drag cars?

Ding Ding Ding, I think that's right.

50 19681/2 CJ's with VIN's 135007-135056.

Which would not apply to either a GT/CS or a HCS.

The only way to verify it is through a Marti report only for cars made from 1967 and later. There is a link in this site to getting one. Good luck!!

Jerry like looking at most limited production or "special" cars you can work from two ends

1- what identifiers would indicate if a car could be one of the group

2- what identifiers would indicate if a car could NOT be one of the group

#2 can often make the evaluation quicker. So looking at production/assembly plant and the projected build dates will help here

One of a specific number of DSOs must be on the data plate (HCS may have only DSO 51), and the sequential number must be somewhere around 118000 to 172000 for a GT/CS, and from 165229 to 171998 for a HCS.

This won't tell you if you have a GT/CS or HCS but it will tell you if you don't.

ETA: Oh, and the VIN must start with 8R01.

On my 68 HCS Marti Report is has both options listed, California Special and High Country Special with a DSO 51
