I found this 68 HCS J code in Lincoln NE. Dad and I brought it home today we told our wives that it needed our help! It is cool that my dad is almost 81 still wants to restore cars. I am lucky we share this hobby and can spend time together. We will order a Marti report and let you know more details soon. Here are a few pics that I got as we unloaded it tonight

I wondered that too. After a closer look it appears it was a poor attempt at speaker mounting. I am glad it was cut where it does not show it other wise is a pretty good door.

I can fix those 4300's!! Wonder if it has a brass float already in it? Send it my way and I will fix it and wet test it on a known 302!

Here is the Marti report. We were happy to confirm that it was a GT.

Will do Mike.
This car is in Paul's book but is not in the online registry.

On the Marti Report it says California Special but then on the bottom it says High Country Special - I must be reading it wrong..

Yeah, that is interesting that it notes both GTCS and HCS on the Marti... is that the norm for the HCS?

Nice find, good to know another one that was on its way to nowhere will now be well taken care of.

Both GTCS and HCS Marti reports normal say California Special Package or option. This is the first that I have seen say High Country Special. It makes no sense to me because there is and never was a HCS option.
I would like to ask Kevin Marti about it.
Here is my other HCS Marti.

Yeah, the Marti report on my 68 HCS also says "California Special" and not "High Country Special" in addition.

My memory may be a little faulty here, but I thought there was some talk of Kevin Marti adding the HCS designation to his reports to try to avoid confusion. Of course having both GT/CS and HCS listed on the reports maybe causes a different type of confusion.

Basically a 68 Mustang with the California Special option and DSO of 51 is a High Country Special.

My Marti on the HCS has both listed so my bet is that Kevin is adding the High Country Special to the report to simply confirm that it truly is an HCS.

Cheers,

Ron

You are probably right. I was never confused, as Jon said a 51 DSO is a HCS. Simple as that.
Cool Ron our cars were built on the same day.
Dad has a 68 S code coupe that was sold from the same dealership as this last HCS.

Here is a project update. We had it blasted to remove the paint and rust. This car has had a hard life, I found a bulge in the floor under the rear seat and found that the rear wheel must have hit a curb and drove the rear torque box inward 1/2 inch. That must have rolled the car crushing the scoop into the quarter and causing the roof to be replaced but poorly. I am guessing that it was totaled and went to a salvage yard where the J code 302 and 9 inch rear axel were removed. It also got 5 bullet holes in the door and rocker panel. Some time in the 70s or 80s some one must have decided to save it but did very poor work on it. It then sat in a yard in Lincoln NE. for twenty years. Here are some pictures of the damage and repairs we have made so far.
