1968 California Special. Factory 289/AT/PS/PB/AC. Marti report included in pics. Purchased in northern Louisiana in 07/13. The previous owner purchased the car in California when he was stationed there in the Navy. He had the car for 22 years and I believe he said there were two previous owners but not completely sure. The previous owner completed an amateur restoration in the summer of 2006 and the body was repainted the original Meadowlark Yellow. The interior was also completely stripped. I believe the carpet and upholstery were replaced and everything else is original. Period correct floor and overhead consoles were added at that time, along with GT wheels and a tachometer in place of the original clock. The speedometer reads 43525 as of 08/02/23. In the interest of full disclosure, the previous owner said the speedometer cable broke while he had it, and he estimated he put about 2000 miles on the car before the cable was replaced, and stated the odometer had never turned over. If the information is valid, it’s estimated the car currently has approximately 45300 original miles. I added an LED sequential turn signal kit to the rear lights but otherwise I haven’t messed with the car other than normal maintenance/repairs. It’s not a show car but it is a solid weekend cruiser. Sold as is in Chesapeake, VA. You can come by to look or arrange shipping.

Recent work includes:

03/23 Rear main seal, oil pan gasket, transmission pan gasket, and rear freeze plugs replaced.

09/22 Fuel pump and feed hose replaced.

08/22 Carburetor rebuilt.

06/22 New tires…less than 250 miles on them currently.

03/22 New Xlerator mufflers.

Known issues:

- Gas needle only goes up to about ¾ when the tank is filled.

- Overhead console was apparently not wired correctly when installed and the lights don’t work correctly.

- A little hesitation getting into second gear.

- The shift lever sometimes has to be jiggled to start the car (possibly a neutral safety switch issue).

- Factory A/C is complete but doesn’t blow out cold air. A tech gave it a cursory glance while the car was in the shop for some other issue and said he thinks the wrong refrigerant was put in at some point. I don’t know if that’s the issue and I’ve never worried about it since it’s not driven much.

- The paint is starting to show its age. Overall, I’d give it a 7/10. There appears to be a rust bubble on the left rear quarter and a blemish on the trunk that appears to be a poor touch up and not rust. There is also a small crack on the piece between the trunk lid and the rear glass that may be rust.

I wonder why the California Special script is incorrectly placed on the left quarter panel.
