Marti report question

Hi All

Got my report today and have a quick question......

I have determined that the car is a 289 car that has a 302 the 302 does have the correct SN on the block and I know it was a 1 owner car.

Why does the Marti still show it as a 289 car?

Is this something that was not in the information when the car was built?

I was expecting the marti to have the car as a 302 not a 289.

The SN code of the car does show a 289.

Thanks all

Ford ran out of 289 blocks during the 1968 year. They substituted 302 blocks. Your car still has 289 cubic inches though.

As discussed in your earlier post, 289s were based on 302 blocks in 1968. You are very fortunate that you DO have the original engine in your car as evidenced by the vin number on your block. The Marti would not show it as a 302 because it is a 289.

Cool

Kinda confusing to me but you guys are the experts so the block is 302 and it is destroked I assume or something like that.

Very interesting this is my first experience with a setup like this I am used to a 302 being a 302 and a 428 being a 428.

You guys are the best!

Thanks for the clarification

It is kind of like a 1966-67 Mercury 410 cubic inch engine. 390 block with a 428 crank.

289 and 302 had the same bore, but with different crank shafts. There are some casting differences in the blocks, that will not allow a 289 block to be used with a 302 crank shaft.

What Scott said, plus: The 289 was used from 1965 to 1968. You can think of a 302, which came out in 1968, as a stroker version of a 289, rather than a 289 as a "destroked" 302. The evolution of the Ford small block is something worth investigating if you have an interest in engines. The 289 predecessor was the 260, which had the same basic block architecture but a smaller bore and a crank that would later be used in the 289.
