1968 Re-painting Arm Rest

It appears that the left armrest on my car has been poorly re-painted. The dark red is flaking off and the armrest appears to be originally black. I have repainted interior plastics before and have no issues with it. My concern here is that the paint appears to be quite thick. I can flake it off with my fingernail. Any suggestions about getting the poorly applied paint off to the level that I can then refinish it? Would I be better off simply ordering a repop?

Thanks.

I would try lacquer thinner and a rag to strip off the old paint. Or just buy new red ones.

If it's flaking off, I'd try to gently remove as much as possible that way first. Laquer thinner works well, but if you get carried away, you might remove the texture as well.

Steve,
Is there an armrest in any of those boxes of parts?

Well thanks for looking in your spare parts for me. Looks like I will be getting a repro anyways. I took the armrest off the door, and the paint flakes off really easily, but the vinyl at the leading edge of the rest is cracked underneath so I'm not going to bother re-painting it.

I've looked at the Scott Drake catalog and they don't list dark red, which is what I need. They only show red. I assume that would be a brighter red.

NPD does have one listed as maroon. Sounds more like dark red to me.

That's what I thought. Funny how Ford calls it dark red, Scott Drake call it red, and NPD calls it maroon.
