Well, I finally took some time off today to drive about an hour out the West Coast Road to Jordan River and take a walk in the woods with "Jake", my German Shorthaired Pointer. I was hoping that we might see a Ruffed or Blue Grouse, but we didn't put up any birds.
That's OK though, any day spent walking around in our beautiful West Coast countryside is worth the effort!
(I don't have to light up the tires on the Special every time I take it out for a drive to enjoy driving it either!)

West Coast logging ...

They had been doing some logging in the area I like to hunt too, and here is some of the equipment that they use. These machines make short work of medium sized trees!

That's looks the same as the stuff I used to hunt in on the Oregon coast, when I lived there. Very beautiful, but tough to walk through quietly. I especially liked hiking through the brush after it had rained (all the time) and you'd be soaked in 10 minutes. Of course that was when I was younger and couldn't afford Gore-tex.

Yeah, it's pretty thick stuff as soon as you leave the gravel logging roads. It's become very tough to walk around in the "slash" too (the logged off hillsides), as in the old days they'd clean it right off and slash burn the leftover underbrush and trash limbs in big piles. Unfortunately it has now become politically incorrect to burn the leftover slash and so now there is a downright nasty tangle of limbs instead, which are covered in new vegetation, and the hidden limbs can be real "ankle breakers" if you're not careful! You pretty much have to stick to walking on the old, abandoned gravel logging roads now just to be safe ...
I didn't see any black bears yesterday either, although I did see some "scat" here and there on some of the roads we walked. There is a large population of black bears around our area and we normally see quite a few.

Great photos, especially the bear scatt. I hunt right in the middle of the highest concentration of Grizzly bears in Idaho, we see Grizzly sign all the time, scatt, tore up trees while looking for grubs and ants and as soon as you purchase your deer and elk tags Fish and Game sends you a big brochure on hunting in and managing your downed game in Grizzly country. You can't down game here and go get horses to bring it out, the Grizzly will be the proud owner of your downted game before you can get back. Just as they became conditioned to a rope up a tree meant food above and they would chew the rope to drop the food they are now becoming conditioned to associate gun shots with free elk and deer and they will go to gun shots in some situations looking for the game.

I pack both bear pepper spray and pistol when I archery hunt and I add the rifle to the mix when rifle hunting.

Very nice pictures. Really can't go walking to much around here - first day of fall. But, it feels more like summer here in CA with temps forecasted to be in the 100s. Hot!

A day in the woods is a good day. Our hound group goes to River Meadows off of Jordan Road in Arlington.

Here is my Ridgeback, Kito, natural sight and scent hound. And Boo my lab mix, with foster Ridgeback pup Merilee.

Cowichan Lake on Sunday ...

So this time we drove up to Cowichan Lake and drove up to "Heather Mountain". We took 3 Shorthaired Pointers this time, but although a good time was had by all there were no grouse to be found. Not important when you get to enjoy scenery like this!

If any geology geeks find yourself in north central Washington be sure to check out Balancing Rock at Omak Lake. It's real and natural.
