What cam would be a good replacement? Engine is apart for some needed work, and going to put in a new cam while its apart.

It is a C code GTCS, and is staying one, Autlite 2100, stock exh manifolds, OEM CI heads and intake. Hydraulic lifters and stock heads/valves. Zero interest in stroking it or swapping to a 4 bbl. Only modification is dual exahust, had it lying around so replaced the rusty single pipe during the recent repaint.

Am always confused by the dozens of cams that the on line selectors provide... NPD has a stock replacement but would think with shipping weight and the low $ a local selection may be a reasonable option, and that a mild upgrade would not hurt over the pretty weak OEM specs.

Comp Cams High Energy 240H. That is the smallest of their "High Energy" line. Very smooth idle, ideal for stock applications with stock gearing. Anything is going to be an improvement over the stock cam. Just ensure you use quality valve train parts. Should give you many years of trouble-free performance. Good luck with it!

I'm running a Comp Cams in mine as well, although it's a bit more aggressive, and I like it.

When my C code was apart, the machine shop showed me the cam which they thought was a Crane cam. The part number on it is #36-05-01. The engine is bored .030 over, is balanced and runs very strong.

Be sure to get the correct valve springs for whatever cam you choose.
