Doug took up smoking this morning! Bad habit for him!! The return hose for the power steering rested on the block and essentially melted spewing smoke and burning smell.
The resulting hole dropped enough fluid for me to have no power steering. A stranger drove by and saw me looking under hood and car and stopped to ask what happened. After explaining it, he told me to follow him into town for a fix. After waiting for engine block to cool (i had already driven 3 hrs) it was decided that the existing hose had more than enough slack to have damaged area cut off and re-install remaining section. Thankfully the garage made time for my emergency and I was back on road with all fluids topped up and a full tank of gas in 3 hrs. Could have been much worse!
The remaining 8 hrs of driving went off well mechanically........traffically was another issue...THANKS A LOT CHATTANOOGA!
