1968 Your CS's Production Date in History

This is a website that tells what happened on every day in history, in 1968.

http://www.brainyhistory.com/years/1968.html

You can compare your GT/CS's production date to what's described on this site.

Of course, the date on the door tag may not be the actual date (refer to your Marti Report), but it's a close approximation.

Have fun!

Paul.

July 18 Intel incorporates.

Wonder what 1 share of stock went for back then?

I heard somewhere that this was the last day they built California Specials; which also happens to be the day my Special was built; and one day after my birthday.

S-code 171560

Build date according to Marti July 18th 1968

Tim our cars were built on the same day but 2172 VIN numbers apart. How many cars did (could) Ford build in a day? I wonder what the last CA SP built that day VIN number was (is). I also wonder where my S-code falls in the close to last S-code built. It's gotta be fairly close.

...All good questions Doug. Is it also believed that the last 251 were High Country Specials? If so, I wonder how it works out that my (verified) HCS is #167111; 2,277 lower than the GT/CS...

Doug, is your build date taken from the door tag or a Marti report? The door tag is the SCHEDULED build date but it's often built early or late.

July 3rd ...

July 3rd for our "S" code # 161311 ... 37 days behind schedule.

Tom Cruise's Birthday! I guess he'll have to do a movie about California Specials now .... maybe an automotive sequel to "Days of Thunder" ...?
Hell, we'd even consider letting him use our "Special" for the movie since it was built on his Birthday! It's everything Hollywood likes in a movie car too ... it sounds pretty good at an idle ... and sounds great at full throttle with the back tires smoking and squealing ... and it's BRIGHT SCREAMING RED! It'd JUMP right off the screen at ya!
Hmmmm ... Gotta call Tom's agent on Monday ... maybe we can do lunch ...

mine's not too exciting (3/14/68, 5 days after my 9th birthday, though):

* CBS TV suspends Radio Free Europe free advertising because RFE doesn't make it clear it is sponsored by the CIA
* POM performs atmospheric nuclear test at Maralinga Australia

My build date of January 2 is the day Nixon inacted the drop to 55 miles an hour for all freeways! Go figure!

Me and Sammy Hagar think differently!!

I'm glad to see this thread so popular....as it puts our GT/CSs into context.

The Fords of that time reflected the same level of technology that was being used to get Apollo to the Moon. The first flight that circled the moon didn't happen until late 1968.

Vietnam and protests and assassinations all happened while our cars were being "born". Imagine AM radios playing at the San Jose factory about Bobby Kennedy or MLK as interiors and engines and suspension were being assembled.

We ARE driving history. This is the context and vision that I'm opening the book with.

California Made it Happen...in a very dramatic and uncertain world.
