Flexplates & Harmonic Balancers

Will someone explain what the ounce rating on flexplates and harmonic balancers means?

I believe it's the amount of weight on the flexplate and harmonic balancer needed to balance your engine. SBFs are externally balanced. Your 289 should use a 28 oz. flexplate and harmonic balancer .

Apparently, you can't mix-and-match 289 and 302 flexplates. Over the years, there were many variants of the balancers and flexplates.

Some machine shops can do an external balance for you, too.
