Coil springs (stock spring rate): need help

I'm looking at upgrading the suspension on my 67 mustang. When I asked my mechanic what coil spring rate I should chose, he said he needed to know what the stock coil rate was and that I shouldn't increase the rate over 50 pounds.
What do you guys think about this suggestion and does anyone know what the stock spring rate is on a 289 67 mustang.

I ordered my rear springs from Eaton Springs. Here's a link. I'd contact them. A lot of vendors carry their product and you might get a little cheaper price through one of them.
