A rough idle can be caused from a bad vacuum retard if you have a thermactor type distributor with dual advance. The diaphragm fails and in the case of a refurbished item the retard diaphragm is never reinstalled. Before you spend a wad of $$$$ on your carb, points, or giving up and going to a electronic distributor (CS purist crowd gasps) you should send you distributor out to get checked and recurved - balanced.

I know there are several people that do this work but I was VERY pleased with the work done by Distributor Dynamics P.O. Box 264 Brownsville, Ca. 95919 (530) 675-2522. When I got my 68 J-code it had been sitting for over 30 yrs. As you can imagine I had a hell of a time removing the old crusted and frozen on distributor. When I finally got it out I knew it was toast. I keept it anyway. A year later I sent it out to Chuck. It looked like a piece of art when I got it back.

Heres the report:
