1968 Smog Tubes

Is this a correct smog tube for a '68 J-code (photo on left)?

My '68 C-code just had a big blue valve at the rear, but no tube (photo on right).

Typically see the "tree" style on 68s and the single connection on 67 internal style systems

Oops, sorry, I forgot I owned Bob Mannel's bible.
It says 289s had the large valves and 302s had the tubes, so the setups in both photos are correct for those particular engines.

It's my understanding that all manual transmission 1968 Mustangs had them.

Correct, all manual transmission 6 and 8 cylinder engines sold in the USA.
The air pump and related parts is called the Thermactor smog system.

Canada did not use the IMCO system either, in 1968, different air cleaners too.

Here are photos of the car with the smog tubes that I'm going to inspect Saturday morning. I took these a few days ago but didn't have time to really dig into the car. Tomorrow will be a thorough inspection and drive.

Many of you will see some huge red flags, like the taillight panel screws and the dent inside the right quarter but all in all it may not be a bad car. I'll know more tomorrow and if I don't buy it I'll post my report here for anyone who may be interested.

Looks pretty nice to me. Floorpans & frame OK? All I noticed look like easy fixes.

May be a good starting point needs a lot of little things. I thought the placement of the deluxe disc on the RH dash was odd. Looks like a lot of paint on it at least 2 repaints. Marty

From the quick glance I could take the underside looks great but I'll get the car up in the air tomorrow to make sure.

I'm a little concerned about how the taillight panel is attached. That and the dent in the quarter makes me think it was hit in the rear.

Too bad the paint looks so nice because if I buy the car (which I probably won't) it's all getting scraped off.

From what I could tell the other day I think that with a carb rebuild, a tune-up, some valve seals, some touch-up paint for the door jambs, and some brake-work this car could be a decent driver or rolling restoration for someone.

A black vinyl top without AC is a huge problem in Houston!

I'm also looking at a '67 T-code tomorrow. Gonna be a busy day!

Does this person have a Marti Report?

The data plate is not in the new registry book.

Yes, I saw the Marti but don't have a copy of it yet.

The Marti shows that the car came with headrests but those are gone.

Forgot to mention that the engine is original, and it has a carb with a huge choke on it that I think is original, too.

This car is sequentially in a group with several other GT/CS's.

Arlie, the shifter lever looks correct, except that it is missing the round lock out disc.

Not sure if it won't shift into reverse or if I need to be extra careful shifting into 2nd.

I found out the answer.
With that floppy Ford shifter one needs to be very careful downshifting into 2nd!!!!!

Took another look at the car. As usual there's good and there's bad.

The good is that it drives well, and I think the 80,000+ miles on the odometer are actual miles.

The bad is that it was definitely hit hard in the rear. Both rear frame rails are wrinkled, the steel taillight panel was replaced, and the trunk floor is a sea of wrinkles.
There is also a tiny bubble on one of the doors and the vertical area in front of the battery is rusted through.
The clear coat is also starting to peel in a few places

With the frame rails and the trunk issues my interest in this car would be to fix the easy stuff and keep this car as a J-code, 4-speed, fun to dirve driver, instead of totally restoring it.

I'm only lukewarm on the car right now so if anyone may be interested in it let me know and I'll send you a more detailed description and photos. It's about an hour from my house so running out there to look at something for you is no big deal. In fact, I purchased a fender from the guy so I need to go out there again next weekend to pick it up.

Can anyone tell if this is this the original style carb?

I'll post the Marti when I receive it (hopefully today).

Wow - that was a pretty strong and direct hit. Seen worst but not good


Of course not completely correcting this will effect the selling of the car later if you purchased it



......Can anyone tell if this is this the original style carb?

Style - yes its a 4300. Would have to see the carb number to be sure if its the correct one for the application
